Essay on Hobbies

From the time we are little children we decide what amuses us and what doos not. Also from an early age, some of us start doing certaln things more than others, Some of us like to play games, others liko to collect things and manyothers like to road. Hobbies are what balance our studyingand working lives.

Many of us turn our hobbies into occupations in later life. We actually see that photographers who begin as persons who are ininterested family snapshots, often learn about their cameras so much so that they bocome professionals. They begin as amateurs who cover the weddings of friends and soon become adept at it and make it a part time occupation. From then, thoy may discover that there is more to be earned from photography than from a regular job. The same thing can also happen to computer enthusiasts and writers. They start out as hobbies and become jobs. Such people, who enjoy their work are likely to be true professionals.

With regard to choice of hobbies, it makes sense to choose one that is different from one's occupation. Thus a man who works in an office will do well to play golf or do gardening as a hobby and a man who does manual work could collect stamp. Relaxation has different meanings for different people. Hobbies are meant as relaxations.

Many hobbies are inexpensive, such as stamp collect kite flying, listening to music and canoeing. Yet others are expensive such as yachting, sky diving and sports car racing However most hobbies are within the budgets of most of us, It would be a healthy thing to have at least one hobby. Hobbies provide us with the relaxation that we need to balance our difficult working lives.

ESSAY ON A TRIP TO THE MUSEUM

'The museum is a place where they keep dead things for people to see.' That is what I used to say about the museum. I had last been to the museum when I was in primary school and had not at all been impressed – mainly because I did not know enough at the time to appreciate it. Recently, when I went there, I found that not only was I able to appreciate the museum more, there really is a lot of improvement done to the place.

The place is organized systematically and such that the visitor can begin by turning to one of the wings and slowly emerge at the other. When you finish, you would have seen everything that you wanted to. A trip to the museum is a trip back in time. There are many artifacts there which have been carefully preserved for all future generations. Every attempt is being made to preserve our past – glorious or otherwise.

Old photographs are everywhere, displaying what the country looked like a couple of hundred years ago. The photographs show the dresses the people wore at the time and the jewelry they adorned themselves with. Indeed if we are willing to suspend disbelief for a while we will be transported back in time. The weapon room shows the krises that were used by the Malay rulers and warriors; there are ancient cannons which had been used by the pirates which infested the waters in the region. Then it comes to the recent times, the colonial era where a new set of weapon was used. It is possible to go through era after era as we go from room to room.

Indeed a place to wonder, that is what the museum is. With its effort to preserve the past so dedicatedly, we can be sure that the history of the republic will be remembered by the future generations.

ESSAY ON A TRIP TO THE MUSEUM

Essay on school Funfair

Our school funfair was organized in aid of the school building fund. The school intended to build an annex to the school to house the science laboratory and the science museum. Since ours is an aided school, we had to raise at least part of the funds. So we began it with enthusiasm. Six months prior to the day, all of us were roped in to sell coupons. They were in booklets of two dollars and there was a prize for the student who sell the most number of booklets.

On the day of the much awaited fun fair, a really amusing incident took place at my stall. My class was in charge of the event called ‘Looping the duck’. It was an amusing stall. Twenty cents gave you three loops and all you had to do was stand outside a circle and throw a loop over a duck’s neck. If you succeeded in looping the duck, you were in for a surprise — the duck became yours. It was not easy to loop the duck, because the birds did not generally like to be looped. They shook off the loops as they landed. And as the day wore on, the ducks became expert at this.

One chap in the ‘A level class looped a duck as soon as we opened at 9.00 am. His excitement turned to horror as we handed his prize over to him. As he was on duty, this meant he had to be a duck farmer for the whole day. The last | saw of him, he was walking sadly towards the A level class stall, with a sad looking duck under his arm.

Word travelled fast and only people who were sure that they could handle a live prize turned up at our stall after that. These were mostly elders and they had a field day. They knew exactly what they wanted — roast duck. So Popular was our stall that by 3.00 pm, we had run out of neck All twenty-five ducks at our stall had been ‘captured’. © closed our stall and went to help at the other stalls. The events at at our stall provided topics for conversation for weeks after that.

Essay on My Grandmother

My grandmother, my father's mother, lives with us in our flat. She is the grand matriarch of the family and it is clear that she is the person who is in charge of all family decisions. For a person of her age she is very healthy and strong, even though the only exercise she takes are long walks around the neighbourhood. Her memory is very good and she can remember the names, the classes they are in and the birthdays of all her nineteen grandchildren.

She will be sixty years old at the end of this year. She cannot remember when she was born but she has vivid memories about her younger days in China. She enjoys telling us stories about her hard life in China and in early Singapore. What is really delightful is when she talks about father and all his naughty tricks when he was a boy. I am surprised when I hear some of them because it seems that father was one of the naughtiest boys that ever lived. Usually he is embarrassed when his mother talks about him and when we laugh at his antics.

The way she talks to her children, my father, uncles and aunts, it is as if they were still little children. They seem very afraid of her and do whatever she tells them to at once. This is very good for all of us grandchildren, especially for me. Grandma is always available for us to hide behind. She will protect us from our parents, even when we have done something naughty. Somehow she seems less strict towards us than her own children.

But of late she has slowed down a little. I am beginning to see that she is not as strong as she used to be. She pants whenever she has to climb the steps and likes to lie down most of the time, She also seems to get sick more often. My parents have assured me that it is nothing to worry about, but I am a little concerned. I want my grandmother to be with us for a long time.

Essay on Games

The term ‘games’ if taken at its widest Meaning will include everything from computer games and indoor games to field and court games. It is important to differentiate as some games are good for students while others do more harm than good.

All physically active games, especially team games are good for everyone. Such games develop our bodies and keep the muscles in tone. Since society today is generally less active physically, than in the times of our grandfathers, games are a must to keep us physically active. In addition to keeping fit, team games teach us cooperation, which is an essential quality for life.

Indoor games like chess are fun and at the same time develop our logical and intuitive faculties. Many other indoor games, and some computer games, also fall under this category. Besides these there are a lot of other games which are played for amusement. These too have their uses as it is important to relax in between work. In this category we can include some computer games and Nintendo.

However, like everything in life, games should also be taken in moderation. Even field games like football and hockey which are good for the person physically can lead to the ruin of a person if done in excess. Addiction to games an be like any other addiction. Imagine a student who is so good at games that he is on a few teams. It is likely that he will pay so much attention to games that they will take precedence over everything else — even studies. When this happens then games are bad for students. Indoor games too can become addictions. They may be seized upon as an escape and something to be done even at the expense of all else. That would be a tragedy indeed.

So in conclusion, I would say that in moderation all games are good for students, as they are for everyone. It is only when they are done in excess that they are bad.

Essay on My School

My school, Montfort School, is in the Hougang area. I was told that it is one of the oldest schools in the area and in Singapore. Originally the school was called Holy Innocents’ School and the name was changed about thirty years ago. Monfort School used to be a combined Primary and Secondary School. For ease of administration, they are now run separately. Our history records that the school was founded in 1916. This means that it had survived two world wars. It used to be situated at the end of Upper Serangoon Road, a short walk from the river. Due to development in the area, the school has now been moved to its present location, in another part of Hougang.

Ours is a good school though it is not likely to be as famous as a few other schools in Singapore. As students, we are glad to be in Montfort and would rather be here than in any other school. This is mainly because our school has a reputation of caring teachers and of setting high standards of education. We do not care very much about getting our school name in the newspaper because of fantastic achievements. We are rather contented that more of our students pass the final year and that very few of them drop out of the school.

The school is a boys’ school and has a tradition of excellence in discipline and in producing good students. Student life in the school is an active one. Many of us enjoy our school life and it is clear that this had always been the sat The old boys of the school, one of whom is my father, still talks of the school with fondness and affection. The teachers are dedicated and drive us hard to achieve the standards. Besides studies, there are various school activities which make our school life an enjoyable one indeed.

Essay on My Favourite Teacher

He is tall and thin and when he walks he takes long strides and it is impossible to keep pace with him. Mr. Chia is my Mathematics teacher and my favourite among all the teachers in my school. He is young, only twenty six- years old and still unmarried. He has just completed two and half years of service in the army as a National Serviceman. Perhaps out of habit, he still walks like a soldier.

The main reason I like him, and so do all my classmates is that he is a dedicated teacher. He really loves his job and, I think, he considers all of us as his own children. He is so friendly and kind that sometimes we forgot that he is our teacher. He has a fantastic sense of humour and is joking all the time. Because of his attitude towards the subject and toward us, many of us who used to hate Mathematics now love the subject. Even though he is my favourite teacher, it is clear that, as far as he is concerned, all of us are his favourites.

He dresses very well, usually better than the other teachers. He is neat, tidy and physically very fit. He smiles often and it is obvious that he is a happy man. About his family life, we found out that he is an only child and that he lives with his mother. His father passed away when he was a child. Once when we were talking about fathers, I saw tears in his eyes. We felt sorry for him as it was clear that he missed his father very much. That was the only time that we saw him looking sad.

He takes special care to make sure that all of us like his subject and I believe that is why we are so good at it. It is because of him that Mathematics is the favourite subject for all of us.

Essay on My Best Friend

I first met Joseph when he moved next door to my apartment with his family. His father is teacher in my school, So I was surprised to see Mr. Lim standing outside my block. I ran out to greet him and introduced Joseph to me.

Joseph is quite short for his age. He is secondary one like I am, But not in same school. He is quite dark for someone of Chinese ethnic origin, obviously because he is an outdoor type. He is a scout and spend all his weekend in either scouting activities or in swimming. He has a fine set of teeth, Which flashes readily at everyone. The sharp contrast of his teeth with his dark features makes him all the more attractive. He is not a sportsman and does not take part even in the football, Like I do. I notice also that he is good at his studies. He reads a lot, At least two books a week.

At home, He is a great help to his mother and especially, To his invalid grandfather. Everyday unless it rains, He takes him for a walk in the neighbourhood. Usually I join them and help to push the wheelchair.

What really attracts me to joseph is his kindheartedness. He is very cheerful and kind to everyone he meets, including people, Animals and even plants. When a tree was blow down by a wind, He insisted that we should prop it up. We stopped our walk for an hour and, While his grandfather gave instructions from the wheel chair, We kept it until we had propped up the tree with some wood that we found nearby. I hope to enjoy our friendship forever.
