Tips for IELTS Preparation

Learning a language does not happen in a single or few days. It develops on day by day. That is why, your score in IELTS depends 70% on previous learning since you started learning English formally and informally, and 30% on your preparation for IELTS exams. So, if any one promises you to make you get prepared for high scores in IELTS, without keeping in mind your previous learning level is actually a fake.

In this article, I will tell you some concrete steps and tips which you need to carry out for your IELTS preparation. The first and the most important step for you to completely get familiar with the structure, mode of exam and marking rubrics. You need to decide about which module of IELTS you want to appear, academic or general. It depends on your purpose of taking IELTS exam. If you want to do IELTS for study purposes or for job in some organizations, you need to appear in IELTS academic and if you want to apply for immigration, you need to take IELTS general.

IELTS both academic and general comprise of four parts i.e. reading, writing, speaking and listening. Listening and speaking parts are same for both modules but reading and writing or different. Main difference is on the part of content. Now we will talk about the IELTS preparation in all the four skills one by one.

For reading skill, you need to practice regularly. For this you need not any instructor or teacher. You just need to learn some basic techniques of reading like skimming, scanning  and detailed reading. You can get information about this through online search easily and I will also discuss it in details in a later post. But for reading skill, you can prepare on your own. IELTS official booklet set is useful for its preparation.

For listening skill, you also need a lot of practice regularly. But again you can practice for this skill on your own. For its practice, IELTS official listening book is quite useful. In addition to this, you can use British Council listening applications which are available at British council website. You don't need any special teacher for it. Some tips will be sufficient to cater this skill . As you need to know native speakers of English only stress on strong forms of words like nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs while they pronounce the soft forms of words like pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and auxiliary verbs softly and quickly. So, you need to focus more on strong forms rather than week forms while listening so that you can follow them easily.

For speaking skill, you need a lot of practice with others like teacher, classmates and friends. Try to speak English as much as you can. Remove your hesitation and speak English as much as you can. Fluency is very important for this skill. Proper articulation of words will give you boast in fluency. Hesitation and fear of making mistakes can be hurdle. So, put it aside and just focus on practice. It will develop day by day. For both listening and speaking skill, it is handy to watch English videos, movies and songs.

For writing skill, you need an expert teacher who knows the basics of writing. It is because you need a proper feedback on your writing each day. For this skill, you need to learn grammar, sentence structure, cohesion and coherence. This is the skill where you need a lot of help from teacher.

I hope that this article will give you a brief and practical overview of IELTS preparation.  In the later posts, I will talk about about each skill in details one by one.
